A dull goalless draw between South Africa and Iraq was followed by a goal blitz as Spain overwhelmed New Zealand 5-0 in the Confederations Cup opening day. After the Boys had disappointed their home fans with a poor display at Ellis Park, the Red Fury ruled in Rustenburg as expected. Spain exerted almost no effort to down Oceanic champions New Zealand, who affirmed the fact that they are the underdogs of the competitions. Fernando Torres hit a sensational hat-trick in the space of 17 minutes to wrap-up the victory for the Spaniards, before Cesc Fabregas and David Villa completed the damage. Man of the day: Fernando Torres A virtuoso performance from the Liverpool hitman inspired Spain's massive win over New Zealand. Three goals and an assist make El Nino our man of the day and it seems he is a serious contender for the Golden Shoe should he keep the goals flowing. Goal of the day: Torres (first goal) vs. New Zealand The first one of his three goals on Sunday was arguably the best. Torres opened his account with a classy finish from 20 yards. A delicately-placed shot left Glen Moss with absolutely no chance in the New Zealand goal. Play of the day: The Parker Clearance! An extraordinary goal-mouth clearance from South Africa striker Bernard Parker, but unfortunately for Bafana, it was on the wrong goal line! The Parker clearance was surely the highlight of the opener. Quote of the day "Thank you, thank you, thank you Parker, you should stay in our goal all day!" the Iraqi commentator had every right to be pleased with Parker's heroics.
