Zamalek newly-signed defender Amir Azmi revealed that he had rejected overtures from Greece's Kavala, who have just been promoted to the first division. Several Greek papers reported that Kavala were recently aiming to beef up their rearguard by bringing in the former PAOK Saloniki man. But Azmi is planning to settle down at Zamalek, where he started to carve out his football career many years ago. "Some of Kavala officials called me to discuss a potential deal, but I informed them that I have already put my signature to a new contract with Zamalek," he told FilGoal.com. The 26-year-old admitted that he opted to join the White Knights in order to get back in Egypt fold. "I'm keen to earn an Egypt call-up, and I hope I can draw the attention of the technical staff by playing regularly for Zamalek," he elaborated. Azmi had spells in Greece, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia and Turkey during the past few years, but barely featured for the Pharaohs. Elections Last year, Azmi signed a contract with Zamalek, but he declared it null and void when he felt insulted for being accused of supporting his father underhandedly in the board elections. Azmi's father, a prominent figure inside the club, is expected to be involved in the imminent elections, which could cause some pundits to trigger similar accusations. The towering center-half again assured that he has nothing to do with his father's nomination. "My father and I are separate, I signed for Zamalek and not for my father," he said. "His success in the elections is definitely not contingent upon my existence at the club." Azmi's highlights
