Manchester City registered a historic 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday to hand Manchester United their first home defeat this season. The Citizens, who have beaten United in the first game back in August, needed goals from Darius Vassell and Benjani Mwaruwari to outclass the champions at home for the first time since 1974. Michael Carrick came on as a late substitute to score a late consolation for Alex Ferguson's team. The defeat left United in second place with 58 points, two adrift of Arsenal, who still have Blackburn Rovers on Monday, while City jumped to six with 44 points. The pre-match mood was overshadowed by a moment of silence in memory of the 50th anniversary of the 1958 Munich air disaster. On 25 minutes, England striker Vassell broke the deadlock with an easy close-range finish, after Edwin Van der Sar blocked his initial effort. Benjani couldn't have had a better City debut, as the former Portsmouth hitman headed in Martin Petrov's perfect cross at the stroke of half-time. Sven Goran Eriksson's team held on firm at the back to frustrate the home side throughout the second half, before Carrick came off the bench to fire home United's only goal of the game.
