Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw by Hertha Berlin as their Bundesliga leadership is threatened by Werder Bremen, who thrashed Bayern Leverkusen 5-2. Bayern are still on top of the table despite the second successive draw. They have 36 points, just like Bremen who lie second due to their inferior goal difference. The early exploits of the star-studded Bayern intimidated their rivals but a sudden dip in form demonstrated the Bavarians are not invincible. There was also dressing-room unrest after keeper Oliver Kahn publicly criticized the new arrivals. The former Germany keeper was banned by the club as a consequence. Elsewhere, Bremen recovered from their UEFA Champions League exit at the expense of Leverkusen. Despite falling behind early in the game after Tranquillo Barnetta gave Leverkusen the lead in the seventh minute, Bremen ran riot afterwards. Ivan Klasnic leveled the score in the 30th minute before Brazilian playmaker Diego put the hosts ahead five minutes after restart. Clemens Fritz added the third seven minutes later and Klasnic notched home again in the 63rd minute to kill off Leverkusen hopes. Markus Rosenberg completed the rout six minutes later. Stefan Kiessling scored a consolation for the visitors in the 76th minute. The Bundesliga will stop for a winter break. The action resumes on the first of February.
