Amir Azmi, who plays for Saudi club Al-Shabab, could be joining Egyptian champions Ahli next season, a club source said. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the former Zamalek sweeper was short listed by the club and that the football committee is awaiting the arrival of manager Manuel Jose from vacation to approve the move. "We are interested in Azmi, and we are waiting for the manager's approval to approach him officially," he told Filgoal.com on Monday. Ahli are pursuing a player in the centre-half position, especially after their hopes in signing Ghazl Mahalla stopper Mahmoud Fathallah almost faded.
"We need a player of Azmi's caliber, he is an international player with fine experience from playing abroad, and his physical attributes are excellent as well." Azmi is set to leave Shabab after his agent confirmed his exit recently, and the 24-year-old has received offers from Greece, Turkey and he rejected a move to Esperance of Tunisia. Shabab have set an asking price of 400,000 Euros or a one-year-loan for 100,000 Euros for the want-out defender. Azmi's father, Azmi Megahed, is a well-known figure inside Ahli's arch rivals Zamalek and his move to the Reds could cause controversy.
