Sudan maintained their impressive displays in the 2008 African Nations Cup qualifiers with a 3-0 win over Mauritius on Saturday to stay on the heels of leaders Tunisia who thrashed Seychelles 4-0. Former Ismaili defender Richard Justin scored twice for the Sudanese side and striker Faisal Ajab completed the rout with his third goal in 4 games. In Tunis, the home side faced no resistance as they beat Seychelles by four goals. Essam Jomaa, Amine Chermiti and Kamal Zaiem (twice) were all on target. The Tunisians are in charge of Group 4 on 10 points, with Sudan in pursuit on 9 points. Elsewhere, minnows Uganda produced the shock of the day when they came back from a goal down to beat African giants Nigeria 2-1 in Kampala.
Algeria's celebration was shortlived Rennes striker John Utaka put the Nigerians ahead after 25 minutes, but two second-half penalties from David Oboua and Ibrahim Sekajya gave Uganda a memorable victory, despite playing the last 18 minutes with a man down. Nigeria have 9 points at the summit of Group 3, but Uganda reduced the gap to two points in second place. In Casablanca, two goals from Marouane Chamakh and Youssef Hadji gave Morocco an easy victory over Zimbabwe to maintain their comfortable lead of Group 12 with 7 points. In Group 8, Algeria conceded a 90th minute equalizer from Cape Verde to draw 2-2 away, but remain on top with 8 points. The only Arab losers were Libya, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at Namibia courtesy of a Collin Benjamin 5th minute strike. The Libyans are almost dumped out of the qualifiers after the defeat left them rock bottom in Group 10 with 4 points, three adrift of leaders DR Congo.
