Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan is set to complete a move from relegated side Mainz to Bundesliga club Hamburg SV. Mainz managing director Christian Heidel confirmed that the negotiations with Hamburg are in progress, despite his efforts to keep the club's top scorer. "The negotiations are ongoing with HSV," Heidel was quoted as saying by Kicker magazine. The 25-year-old has already met with Hamburg coach Huub Stevens and will have a medical in Hamburg on Wednesday, before flying to Munich on Thursday to undergo a hernia operation.

Zidan has recently revealed his desire to stay in Germany, as he singled out Hamburg as a possible destination, saying "In Germany, Hamburg is my top priority." Hamburg manager Stevens has been targeting Zidan since January, but he was snapped-up by Mainz from Werder Bremen for a sum of 2.8 million Euros, where he scored an impressive record of 13 goals in 15 games. Zidan's hernia problem ruled him out of Egypt's African Nations Cup 2008 qualifier against Mauritania on June 3rd. The Egyptian international has also been linked to Bundesliga champions Stuttgart, Spanish sides Deportivo La Coruna and Osasuna and French giants Marseille and AS Monaco.
