Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld believes his side have fully deserved their victory over Real Madrid which lifted them to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Dutch striker Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in the competition's history and Lucio added another while Ruud van Nistelrooy notched Real's consolation from the penalty spot late in the game. The Bavarian giants progressed with the away goals rule following a 4-4 aggregate score. "We've returned to the European scene with a good performance. We deserve our place in the quarter-finals, although I'd rather not have gone through the enormous tension of the last few minutes," Hitzfeld was quoted as saying by the club's official website. "The match was divided into distinct phases. We were totally on top for the first half-hour, but then we started having problems in defence and Real were very dangerous. "We stepped up a gear again in the second half and went on the attack. I was pleased about that, we laid down a marker and took a deserved 2-0 lead."
Hitzfeld, who was appointed after the sacking of Felix Magath in a bid to save Bayern's domestic season, was unhappy with the referee's decision to award Real a penalty ten minutes from time. Robinho was allegedly clipped by Lucio inside the area but television replays showed there was a slight contact. "We had the penalty which never was – it looked more like a foul by Robinho." Bayern Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel and Real's Mahamadou Diarra were sent-off right after as they received second bookings for altercation. "Unfortunately, the referee never had the match under control and failed to calm matters down." "He blew for everything, and didn't have enough authority in my opinion. Both second bookings were an over-reaction," Hitzfeld added.
