Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history to help Bayern Munich claim a 2-1 home victory over Real Madrid and book a place in the competition's quarter-finals. The Dutch striker needed 10 seconds to stun the home crowd and overtake the record of Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, who notched home after 20 seconds against PSV Eindhoven in 2002. Brazilian defender Lucio doubled Bayern's lead before Ruud van Nistelrooy sparked the Spanish giants into life ten minutes before the final whistle from the penalty spot. The Bavarian giants progressed with the away-goal rule as they lost the first-leg 3-2 at Santiago Bernabeu. Bosnian winger Hassan Salihamidzic stole the ball from Roberto Carlos in the right-flank before providing a low cross to Makaay, whose right-footed low drive went into the bottom corner of the net. Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello played with a defensive-minded midfield and fielded Van Nistelrooy, Gonzalo Higuain and Raul upfront. Capello's unfamiliar tactics proved ineffective as Bayern had the upper hand and threatened Ilker Casillas more than once on the break. In the 21st minute, Lukas Podolski was released on goal but he hit a poor shot that was easily collected by Bayern veteran keeper Oliver Kahn.
Lucio celebrates the second Sergio Ramos and Ivan Helguera, who formed a partnership in the heart of Real's defense, were incapable of halting Bayern's dangerous counter attacks. Makaay should have put Bayern two ahead in the 27th minute when he went on one-on-one situation before his shot was blocked by the in-form Casillas. Below-par Brazilian midfielder Emerson was replaced by Spanish midfielder Guti in a bid to revive Real's attack. However, Bayern could have repeated what happened early in the match when Mark van Bommel went clear on goal seconds into the second-period but his effort was again denied by Spanish guardian Casillas. Lucio widened Real's misery six minutes past the hour mark when he towered to head Willy Sagnol's corner into the back of the net. Three minutes later, the impressive Salihamidzic capitalized on Real's flimsy defense to head a cross just over the bar. Real were awarded a controversial penalty ten minutes from time when Lucio allegedly clipped Robinho inside the area. Van Bommel and Real's Malian midfielder Mahamadou Diarra were sent-off right after for altercation. Van Nistelrooy stepped-up and hit the ball powerfully into the right corner of the net but it was not enough to hand Los Meringues a place in the quarter-finals.
