Bayern hold Inter to claim top spot, Spartak snatch UEFA Cup spot
Published in FilGoal on 06 - 12 - 2006

Bayern Munich advanced to the UEFA Champions League knockout phase as Group B leaders after a 1-1 home draw with Inter Milan while Spartak Moscow snatched the UEFA Cup ticket after defeating Sporting Lisbon 3-1.
At the Allianz Arena, Roy Makaay fired Bayern in front two minutes past the hour before Patrick Vieira equalized for the visitors in stoppage time.
Bayern Munich finished on top of their group with 12 points, two ahead of second-placed Inter.
Neither team was able to create clear opportunities early in the first-half as the play was totally restricted in midfield.
Bayern were almost ahead six minutes before the break when Willy Sagnol raced down the right-flank and sent a back cross to the onrushing Makaay whose shot went wide.
Mariano Gonzalez responded one minute before halftime when he hit a powerful shot that struck the crossbar.
Former Deportivo La Coruna striker Makaay opened the score line in the 62nd minute when he superbly controlled Van Bommel's long pass on his left foot before drilling a right-footed strike into the back of the net.

Spartak stunned Sporting
Vieira salvaged a draw for the Nerazzurri just before the final whistle when Fabio Grosso's shot was parried by Oliver Kahn into the path of the French international who converted the ball in the empty net.
Elsewhere, Spartak grabbed a surprising 3-1 victory at Sporting's venue Jose Alvalade.
Roman Pavlyuchenko stunned the home crowd as early as the seventh minute after he took advantage of a rebound to fire a brilliant bicycle kick into the net after Martin Jiranek's initial shot hit the crossbar.
Maksim Kalinichenko doubled the lead in the 16th minute when he connected with Vladimir Bystrov's chip pass at the far post to head home into the empty net.
Carlos Bueno scored the consolation in the 31st minute after he headed home Rodrigo Tello's cross from the left hand side.
Boyarintsev ensured Spartak's win one minute from time with an easy tap-in.
Both teams are level on five points but Spartak advance based on the head-to-head system.
