Ahli manager Manuel Jose didn't criticize Egypt captain and Anderlecht midfielder Ahmed Hassan in any statement to the press, his translator Ahmed Abdo said. "Jose never mentioned Hassan on any occasion since the African Cup of Nations last year," Abdo told FilGoal.com on Sunday. "And Even then, he only praised Hassan's abilities which led Egypt towards the title," added Abdo, who translates all Jose's statements during press conferences and even inside the dressing room. Egyptian newspaper 'Sawt Al-Ummah' reported that Jose refused signing Hassan, 32, because of his age despite repeated attempts from the club administration to convince him. Hassan replied to the reported statement on Friday, saying that player's age isn't as much crucial as his fitness and skills. "Jose was disappointed because of this report and insisted to call Hassan himself and express his full respect and appreciation," Abdo said.
Hassan Hassan confirmed the phone call and said he was happy to be contacted by the Portuguese coach. "Jose told me that I am an important player whom any coach would like him to be within his ranks," Hassan told FilGoal.com. "I doubted that Jose would say such things because he is professional enough to assess any player's efforts and fitness regardless of his age." The veteran holding midfielder was linked with several clubs in the summer including Cairo giants Ahli and Zamalek. Hassan said he is likely to return to Egypt next year but stressed he hasn't signed for any club yet.
