Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan scored to help Werder Bremen edge Hamburg 2-1 and reach the German League Cup final. Zidan put Bremen ahead in the 50th minute before Boubacar Sanogo leveled the score for Hamburg in the 70th minute. Hamburg's Nigel de Jong was sent off 15 minutes from time and Bremen took advantage of the dismissal through German international Torsten Frings who grabbed the winner eight minutes before the final whistle. Zidan, who partnered World Cup top scorer Miroslav Klose in the front line, excelled throughout the match, and was a thorn in the side of Hamburg's defense. In the eighth minute, the 25-year-old almost scored a brilliant goal when he side-stepped two defenders before rounding the keeper, but a Hamburg defender cleared the ball to deny Zidan's effort. Bremen will face the winners of the other League Cup semi-final clash between Bayern Munich and Schalke 04.
