Middlesbrough came back from two goals down to beat Romanian outfit Steaua Bucharest 4-2 in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-finals that took place at the Riverside stadium on Thursday to reach the Cup finals for the first time in their history. Italian striker Massimo Maccarone played a pivotal role in Middlesbrough's passage to the finals after scoring his team's fourth goal against Steaua in the 89th minute, a repeat scenario of his fourth goal against Swiss side FC Basel that secured a place for them in the semi-finals. Steaua came 2-0 up through Nicolae Dica's goal in the 16th minute and Dorin Goian's in the 24th minute, before the Premiership club jumped four up through a Maccarone brace in the 33rd and 89th minutes, an Australian player Mark Viduka goal in the 64th minute and a defender Chris Riggott goal in the 73rd minute. Middlesbrough had suffered a 1-0 defeat to Steaua in the first-leg. Elsewhere, Spanish club Sevilla beat German club Schalke 04 1-0 in the second-leg of the UEFA Cup semi-finals to face Middlesbrough in the finals. The first-leg ended in a goalless draw.
