Top-seeded Andy Roddick struggled past fellow American Mardy Fish in three sets to reach the second round of the Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis on Tuesday. The 23-year-old star survived a tough match that witnessed only one service break in the first set and lasted two hours and 15 minutes. The world number three, who failed to capitalize on three consecutive break point opportunities in the third set, raced to a 6-0 lead in the tiebreak to grab a 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(2) victory over Fish, who fired 17 aces before surrendering to Roddick. Roddick's second round opponent will be Australian Wayne Arthurs, who beat Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-6(2). Meanwhile, three of the tournament's top seeds bowed out on Tuesday as fourth-seeded Robby Ginepri, fifth-seeded James Blake and seventh-seeded Max Mirnyi all suffered shocking straight-sets defeats. America's Ginepri and Blake fell to Dmitry Tursunov and Kristof Vliegen respectively while 2005 Memphis finalist, Mirnyi was crushed 6-0, 6-1 by Sweden's Robin Soderling. Other Tuesday winners include Croatian world number 61, Ivo Karlovic and French qualifier Julien Benneteau. German seeds, Nicolas Kiefer and Tommy Haas, highlight the first round action on Wednesday.
