Wigan edge Arsenal into Carlin Cup final on away goals
Published in FilGoal on 25 - 01 - 2006

Recently promoted Wigan managed to edge Arsenal into the Carling Cup final, their first major final in the club's history, despite the 2-1 defeat in the match that took place on Tuesday.
Thierry Henry headed home on the 65th minute to grab the lead for Arsenal before Robin van Persie netted the second from a superb free-kick in the second period of extra-time.
However, Wigan's Jason Roberts spoiled Arsenal's close victory with a goal in the 119th minute to beat the more experience Premiership side on away goals.
Arsenal's defeat to Wigan comes as another bead in a sting of losses after losing 1-0 to Everton in the Premiership.
Meanwhile, Wigan boss Paul Jewell insisted that his side deserved to qualify to the Carling Cup final and expressed his content with the players' performance.
"We fully deserved to go through. I'm so pleased for the players, the chairman and supporters," Jewell was quoted as saying by BBC Sport on Tuesday.
"It is difficult to put into words. Getting into the Premiership was the biggest thing but this is a wonderful bonus," he added.
On the other hand, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger lamented the last minute defeat and insisted that his biggest disappointment was losing to less experienced clubs like Everton and Wigan.
"It is not so much that we do not go to the final, it is just the fact we were beaten a bit in the same way as we were at Everton. That is a little bit naïve with the experience we have. We are disappointed. There was one minute to go, and then we are out of the competition,” Wenger said.
