One minute before the final whistle, The England international met Ryan Giggs' free kick with a powerful header into the back of the net. The precious win put United in second place 48 points, 14 points adrift of first-placed Chelsea while Liverpool lie third on 44 points.
Liverpool Earlier on Sunday, Chelsea lost their first home points of the season after they were held to a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic. Icelandic international Eidur Gudjohnsen put Chelsea in front in the 19th minute when he scored from the rebound after Hernan Crespo's initial effort was denied by Charlton keeper Thomas Myhre. Unmarked Marcus Bent grabbed the equalizer in the 59th minute when he looped a header over Chelsea keeper Petr Cech after he was set-up by Darren Ambrose.
