ABOUT 300 senior Egyptian and foreign surgeons open a two-day conference in Cairo today with the latest organ transplant techniques and surgical procedures appearing high on the agenda, the event's organiser said on Tuesday. Dr. Mahmmoud el-Meitini, the liver transplant professor at Ain Shams University in Cairo, said that the gathering – the first of its kind in Egypt – came in conjunction with the Government's approval of the human organ transplant law. Dr. el-Meitini added that the participants would explore the latest surgical techniques in liver, kidney and pancreas transplant operations, as well as ways to boost their OT skills for Egyptian doctors. "The specialists, who have come from the US, Europe and Australia, will review more than 100 research papers about new methods that are being applied in the liver, kidney and pancreas transplant operation and how the Egyptian surgeons can benefit from them," Dr. el- Meitini said. The participants are expected to officially approve an ambitious training programme for Egyptian organ surgeons and network of nine medical centres that will be specialised in performing such type of operations in Egypt, he said. Dr. el-Meitini added that the participants were also expected to approve a proposal calling for holding a bi-annual continued education programme that targets junior organ transplant surgeons, ICU staff, post-operative care medical staff and anesthetists.
