In the second round of the 19th African Cup of Nations Handball Championship in Cairo Monday night, Egypt's men thrashed Democratic Republic of Congo 32-17. With this win, the Pharaohs have alraedy booked a berth in the semis. Their match against Morocco started last night when The Gazette went to print. In Monday night's game, Egypt dominated almost all the ball. Hussein Zaki and his teammate Karim Saeed energised the Pharaohs from the start. They took the lead with four goals, ending the first half with 17-9. In the second half, Egypt's coach, Gamal Shams, introduced playmaker Mohamed Alla', left-wing Mahmoud Zaki and goalkeeper el-Sayyed Mohamed. With this formation, the Pharaohs firmly seized control of the match. In the same men's tournament, Libya clinched their first win when they beat Côte d'Ivoire 27-22 in the Canal city of Suez on Monday night, while Congo defeated Nigeria 31-30 in Suez on Monday night as well. Tuesday's games include Egypt vs Morocco. Algeria beat Angola 27-19 in the same game in Cairo on Tuesday. Thursday women's matches feature Angola vs Côte d'Ivoire and Tunisia vs Algeria.
