Pictured is a Canadian man, working on an international project in Juba, South Sudan, who decided to fly north to Cairo to see in 2013. Some people had told him that there might be security risks, but he found the Egyptian capital very peaceful, although, as he rightly observed, the traffic is chaotic! Notice the smart new T-shirt that he's wearing, purchased in Khan el-Khalili and recalling the revolution of nearly two years ago. Regrettably, many of the small bazaars in the Khan have closed or the owners have had to lay off staff, because of the number of tourist arrivals tailing off. The good news is that there are signs that tourist numbers are gradually picking up again, because, yes, safety and stability are returning to Egypt. It must also be remembered that Western tourists find the prices here very reasonable. More of them should make the most of this, in order to help the country's economy get back on its feet.
