Supporting culture in Lebanon
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 20 - 01 - 2013

BEIRUT - As part of its role in supporting and developing creativity and culture in the Lebanon and co-operating with the cultural movement in the Arab world, Shams Association in Beirut is hosting a Drama Translation Workshop from 21st to 25th January.
Eight international translators have been awarded grants to attend the five-day workshop, which will work on finding the best way to translate Arabic theatrical texts - plays and monodramas - into English and French.
The workshop will be facilitated by two professional translators.
The first is Sarah Enany, a lecturer in drama at the English Department, Cairo University, who has published translations into English of several plays, short stories and a novel, besides translating several film scripts and often doing simultaneous translations at artistic events and theatrical workshops.
The second is Marie Elias, an author, translator and professor of literature and theatre at Damascus University, Faculty of Arts, Department of French Language and Literature, and at the Saint Joseph, University of Beirut, Lebanon.
The event, part of the Dramaturgie Arabe Contemporaine (Contemporary Arab Dramaturgy) Project, organised by La Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseilles, France), Shams (Beirut, Liban), Al Harah (Beit Jala, Palestine), El Teatro (Tunis, Tunisie) and le Collège International des Traducteurs Littéraires (CITL, Arles, France), is funded by the European Union.
