We need tougher and more reliable inspection rules to keep contaminated food and other dangerous products out of Egypt. New rules are also required to protect imports and turn unsafe products away at the border. The government has to find ways to guarantee the safety of imports; it needs to have the power to order a product recall when safety concerns arise. It could also sign agreements with other countries so the food to be imported meets Egyptian health and safety standards. The government could offer new incentives to importers, who maintain the required safety practices. It could improve the training of inspectors so they can stop dangerous goods before they reach Egypt. Furthermore, the government has to increase the penalties for violators, while importers need to comply with mandatory safety rules.
