The Gazette and the 1952 revolution (263) The revolution and pacts (94) ‘The Dirty Border War' Sinai raids 6- ‘One lesson is not enough for Israel'
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 31 - 08 - 2012

Using its from the Cairo press corner to further display its views regarding the grave situation along the Egyptian-Israeli borders, The Egyptian Gazette of November 6, 1955 reproduced a commentary in Al-Akhbar daily by Mr. Galaleddin El-Hamamsy in which he said":
“One lesson is not enough for Israel. The Egyptian Armed Forces, by their counter-attack on the Israeli forces, have given the latter an unforgettable lesson. Ben Gurion's gang has paid a high price as a result of their treacherous attack on the Egyptian forces at Sabha at 10 pm on Wednesday. Early on Thursday, Israel announced that her troops had won the battle while the Egyptian forces were marking arrangements for launching their counter-attack to teach the Israelis a good lesson. Before noon yesterday, the Egyptian counter-attack began and within four hours the Egyptian forces had regained every inch of land on the battlefield.
“The Israeli losses were five times as great as those of the Egyptians. Actually, Ben Gurion's gang was very much in need of that lesson; and Ben Gurion personally had to be taught such a lesson at the beginning of his new term of office.
“Ben Gurion attempted to deceive the world, but the peoples of the world are now laughing at him... He attempted to mislead international public opinion by pretending that he wanted peace and sought to settle outstanding disputes between Egypt and Israel. He announced in the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) that he would like to meet Prime Minister Gamal Abdul Nasser.
“The Western press supported Ben Gurion's statement and wondered why Egypt did not accept his proposal...... A few hours after the Western press had published their comments on Ben Gurion's speech, the Israeli forces launched their attack on Sabha........
“How can we deal amicably with such a people who do not know what honour means... The word ‘honour' is not to be found in their Hebrew dictionary. We assure Ben Gurion that our soldiers are willing to teach him and his gang further lessons if necessary."
“In our previous comment on Ben Gurion's speech yesterday, we said that it was but an attempt to mislead world public opinion.
“We wonder whether or b not the Tripartite Declaration made by the US, the UK and France in 1950 is still in force. That Declaration was made with the objective of ensuring peace and security in the Middle East. The Western Powers have not complied with the provisions of their own Declaration. They have only expressed regret (over the attack on Sabha).
“It is to be hoped that the Western Powers are now convinced that Egypt was right when she decided to obtain arms for defence from any source, and that she was also right when she announced it would no longer rely on the Tripartite Declaration."
