In the face of the loud pronouncements put forward by some Islamist candidates, who introduced themselves as honest enforcers of Allah's will and Shari'a (Islamic Law) one earth, the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayyeb made it quite clear that whoever intends to enforce Shari'a should concentrate on its spirit rather than its punishments. He also called on the future President of Egypt to create dignified living conditions, achieve justice and democratic rule, show respect for the human rights and equality of all citizens. The Grand Sheikh refrained from expressing his preference for any presidential candidate, which conveyed a clear message to the Egyptians in general and the Muslims in particular. They should not be fooled by those claiming to be agents of Allah, but choose those who seek real reform of the economy, education and health services that suffered from serious deterioration under the previous regime. All sheikhs and scholars of Al-Azhar should repeat el-Tayyeb's words, to protect Egypt's moderate Islam from extremist movements that insist on spreading a culture and tradition that has not been part of Egypt for many centuries, protected by the prestigious Sunni institution Al-Azhar. El-Tayyeb did well by raising his voice to oppose those wanting to monopolise religion and introduce themselves as the true representatives of Islam, while others are supposed to be the infidels who should be fought in any possible way. It is Al-Azhar's duty to protect not only the bright moderate image of Islam but all citizens from being fooled by political opportunists who use religion to reach their goal of rule and power. That is why Al-Azhar should continue to be the only Islamic reference for Egyptian Muslims; the religious institution that pronounces the final judgment over all religious points of difference.
