WAVING the national flag and lighting fireworks, hundreds of jubilant Egyptians took to the streets of Cairo and other cities of the country Sunday night to celebrate their national football team's win of the African Cup of Nations for the third successive time. “Our team is a team of heroes,” said a euphoric Hassan Moustafa. He was one of hundreds who gathered in the fashionable Cairo street of Gameat el-Dawal Sunday night to celebrate the win. eastern Moustafa, beating a drum in joy, said he and many fans would stay outdoors until the early hours of Monday to receive “the champions” upon their arrival at Cairo airport from Angola. “This is the least thing we can do to al-Malem and his team to show our appreciation,” he said, using the nickname of Egypt's coach Hassan Shehata. Egypt is the only African country to have won the title three times in a row and for a total of seven times. President Hosni Mubarak, whose two sons attended the final game in Angola, congratulated the team on their latest title and “their manly performance”, reported Egyptian TV. Egyptians' jubilation have been doubled with their team's crushing of their arch-rivals Algerians three days earlier in the same tournament. The triumph over Algeria came more than two months after they beat Egypt 1-0 in a dramatic World Cup tie-off in Sudan where Algerian fans attacked Egyptians.
