ALEXANFRIA - Some 28 detainees broke away from Al-Montazah Prison in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria after they had set their detention room on fire, the official Middle East News Agency reported on Friday. The escapees are believed to have been assisted by their families in yet another incident, which signals a breakdown in security in several parts of Egypt. Firemen, supported by local residents, rushed to put out the fire before it extended to other buildings, added MENA. Three detainees, who were in the same place, were seriously injured, according to security officials. Senior officials at the Alexandria Security Department rushed to the site and ordered transfer 34 of detainees to Al-Hadra Prison in the same city, while four others were taken to Al-Montazah Prison, according to a security source. Over the past weeks, similar incidents have been reported by the local media, raising concerns about security in this nation of 80 million.
