CAIRO - Ambassador of Japan Norihiro Okuda attended the opening ceremony of Harpur Memorial Hospital in Sadat City outside Cairo hosted by Bishop Mouneer, the Episcopal/Anglican Diocese of Egypt. Ambassadors of the UK and Singapore, the deputy of Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar and other donors also attended the ceremony on Wednesday. Equipped with outpatients and inpatients, including operation and intensive- care facilities, the new hospital, the first of its kind in Sadat City, is expected to provide over 120,000 citizens in the city with the service of primary healthcare and emergency care. Dozens of international organisations, churches and embassies have assisted in the establishment of the hospital. The Embassy of Japan in Egypt has supported the project with $86,195 for establishing the primary healthcare unit since the beginning of construction in 2007. This grant, according to a press release released by the Japanese Embassy, is extended under the Japanese Government's Assistance Scheme for Grassroots and Human Security Projects. This scheme was launched in Egypt in 1994, and since then 129 projects totalling over $5 million have been implemented.
