IN a big celebration held Thursday night at the Japanese Embassy in Cairo, Egypt's Minister of Higher Education Hany Helal and Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Kaoru Ishikawa attended the opening ceremony of the Kyushu University office in Cairo. The office is considered a bridge between Egyptian and Japanese educational institutions. Kyushu University dates back to 1911, when it was founded as one of Japan's seven imperial universities. There are now 11 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate schools, three research institutes and a hospital. It is located in Fukuoka, a pleasant coastal city of around 1.4 million people and the largest metropolis on the island of Kyushu. The Kyushu University office in Cairo is located in Hadayek el-Maadi, and its Egyptian president, Safwat Hasaballah, is a professor of physics at Cairo's Al-Azhar University. He obtained a doctorate in physics from Japan's Kyushu University.
