OCCUPIED JERUSALEM -Palestinians and Israel are due to resume direct talks in Washington on Sept. 2 in a bid to resurrect two-decade-old efforts to end the Middle East conflict. 1991: Nov. 1: The Madrid Peace Conference sets framework for the peace process.
1993: Sept 13: Israel and the PLO sign Declaration of Principles on autonomy after months of secret negotiations in Oslo.
1994: May 4: Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat sign autonomy accord in Cairo.
2000: July 11-25: US president Bill Clinton hosts talks with Arafat and Israeli premier Ehud Barak at Camp David that end in failure over the issues of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees, sparking a new Palestinian uprising, or intifada. 2001: Jan. 21: Talks in Taba, Egypt, fail to revive the peace process. 2003: June 4: "Roadmap" for the creation of a Palestinian state by 22D5 launched by US president George W. Bush, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas in Aqaba, Jordan. 2005: Feb. 2: Sharon and Abbas - now Palestinian president - meet in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, and declare an end to hostilities. 2007: Nov. 27: Abbas and Israeli premier Ehud Olmert formally restart negotiations at Annapolis, Maryland.
2008: Dec. 27: Israel begins a devastating 22-day military offensive in the Gaza Strip, prompting the Palestinians to suspend talks. 2010: May 9: Indirect talks start. Aug 20: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton invites Israel and the Palestinians to resume direct negotiations in Washington on Sept. 2.
