CAIRO, Sept 20, 2018 - Egypt was ready to support the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) in the field of women's rights, President of the National Council for Women (NCW) Maya Morsi said on Thursday. "In the light of Egypt's chairmanship of the African Union in its upcoming 31st round for 2019, co-operation with the African Union will take the form of carrying out a number of activities which will have a sustainable, positive effect on African women," Morsi said during her meeting with the Head of the ACHPR, Soyata Maiga who is now visiting Cairo. Ms Morsi discussed with Ms Maiga co-operation between the two sides and benefiting from Egypt's expertise in improving the conditions of women in Africa and combating the poverty of women. The NCW head also expressed the Council's readiness to back the African commission in all fields related to women's rights and the sustainable development goals. She spoke of the role of women in establishing stability and combating terrorism, pointing out that the council had held community dialogues in all governorates. The conferences were joined by thousands of women and civil society organisations, Ms Morsi said. The dialogue resulted in the council issuing in October 2017 a statement entitled, "Egyptian women are makers of peace against extremism and terrorism". Ms Morsi referred to the great support that Egyptian women enjoy and which is represented in the declaration by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi of 2017 as the year of Egyptian women. She also pointed out that the council released the national strategy to empower Egyptian women in 2030 which is considered the first strategy in the world to empower women and is direct evidence of Egypt's commitment to achieving the goals of sustainable development.
