By Amina Abdul Salam CAIRO - Every day, science reveals solutions for skin problems. Carboxy, for example, is a non-surgical cosmetic medical treatment. It employs injections to infuse gaseous carbon dioxide below the skin into the subcutaneous tissue. Dr Alaa Abdel Maguid, Dermatologist, says that with age, blood circulation decreases, consequently the oxygen which feeds cells also decreases and as a result, both the building of cells and production of collagen become very slow. Carboxy therapy is a medical procedure in which carbon-dioxide is used for therapeutic purposes, says Dr Abdel Maguid. By applying sterile medical carbon dioxide (CO2 gas) into the skin or fatty tissue, a signal is given of the lack of oxygen and the organism replaces the injected carbon-dioxide with oxygen in only a few minutes, she explained. Conditions that can be cured by this technique are stretch marks that both women and men suffer from and fine wrinkles around the eye and mouth. And carboxy can be used to cure black circles under eye and rejuvenate the skin all over the face and neck. Psoriasis and alopecia can also be treated this way. Concerning the side effects during treatment, Dr Abdel Maguid said that the patient may experience mild pain or itching in the area after the injection, therefore, the dermatologist must advise the patient to avoid strenuous activity and saunas for four hours after a treatment session. The treatment lasts through the patient's compliance with special instructions to care for the treated area and a commitment to repeat treatment every 4-6 months to maintain the outcome. She stressed that the carboxylic injection is safe.
