SINGAPORE, May 5, 2018 – Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb wrapped up a three-day visit to Singapore on Saturday. Singapore was the second state in Tayyeb's Asian tour, which started with Indonesia and will also take him to Brunei. Tayyeb was seen off by Singaporean senior minister for foreign and defense affairs Mohamed Malki Othman, Mufti of Singapore Mohamed Fatris and Egyptian Ambassador here Mohamed Abulkheir. During the visit, Al Azhar Imam held a series of meetings with the Singaporean president, prime minister and deputy premier for national security affairs. Also, Tayyeb delivered the annual lecture of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore on the role of religion in unifying nations and the need for positive integration of Muslims in the societies in which they are living. El Tayyed paid a visit to Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah in Singapore. Aljunied is one of the oldest surviving madrasahs in Singapore. During the visit, El Tayyed met Azhar graduates, teachers and students. He urged them to adhere to Al Azhar's moderate approach, which is based on pluralism and respect for other opinions. The Grand Imam expressed readiness to support madrasahs in Singapore by providing scholarships to study at Al Azhar.
