By: Gazette Staff CAIRO, April 28, 2018 - The Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayyeb on Saturday started a multi-leg Asian tour that would take him to Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei. Sheikh el-Tayyeb's evisit to Indonesia comes in response to an official invitation from Indonesian President Joko Widodo last March, al-Azhar said in a statement. During his stay in Jakarta, Sheikh el-Tayyip would attend an international conference on moderation in Islam, the statement said. This is the second time Sheikh el-Tayyip visits Indonesia. He visited the Asian state for the first time in 2016. In Singapore, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar will meet with a host of the country's officials and participate in a number of events. This is the first time the Grand Imam of al-Azhar visits Singapore since 2006. Hundreds of Singaporean students are attending al-Azhar University in Cairo. In Brunei, Sheikh el-Tayyip will hold a series of meetings to discuss the means of strengthening ties between al-Azhar and the pre-dominantly Muslim sultanate, the statement added.
