Cairo - Yesterday, the Parliament's Committee of Religious Affairs and Endowment sent a formal invitation to Dr. Shawki Allam, the Grand Mufti of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to attend a committee meeting over two draft laws under review on "regulating the religious discourse and fatwa-issuing problems" in Egypt. The former draft law was based on a request submitted by MP Mohammed Shaaban and more than one tenth of the parliament members, while the latter was submitted by Dr. Omar Hamrouch, the Committee's Secretary. On Saturday morning, MP Dr. Osama Al-Abid, the Committee's Chairman, paid a visit to the headquarters of Al-Azhar, the oldest and largest Sunni religious institution in the region, to meet Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, to discuss the committee's propositions. "On Saturday, the Committee discussed a number of important files with al-Tayeb, on top of which was draft laws on Fatwa-issuing and the renewal of religious discourse that must be administered by Al-Azhar.", said Dr. Osama Al-Abid.
