CAIRO, April 11, 2018- An Egyptian-German archaeological mission uncovered more than 4500 new fragments belonging to the statue of King Psamtik I while excavating in the Souk Al-Khamis area of Matariya district in east Cairo, head of the joint team, Ayman Ashmawi, announced on Wednesday. The statue of King Psamtik I was unearthed last year and transferred to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, he added. In his statements, Ashmawi explained that a total of 6400 pieces, including the newly-discovered parts and other items unearthed in earlier excavations, would help provide an image of the statue and facilitate the process of reassembling it. Most of these parts, he continued, were found in a ditch to the south of the statue's pedestal. They show that the statue represented King Psamtik I in a standing position, added Ashmawi.
