CAIRO, March 8, 2018 -- President Abdel Fattah El Sisi delegated on Thursday the Minister of Defence, Sedqi Sobhi, to lay a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Memorial. Sobhi who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, accompanied by Army Chief of Staff Mohamed Farid, also laid a wreath on the tomb of late president Anwar el Sadat, the hero of war and peace. Every year, the Armed Forces celebrate the "Veteran Warrior and Martyr Day" on March 9, the day that witnessed the death of Lieutenant General Abdel-Moneim Riad who sacrificed his life for the sake of the nation. Riad was the chief of staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, when he was killed along with several of his aides in an Israeli mortar attack on March 9, 1969. Riad also commanded the Jordanian forces in the 1967 Six-Day War. The day Riad and his colleagues were killed is commemorated in Egypt as Martyrs' Day.
