Red-handed

Was he shot?: Detectives are investigating the death of a civil servant, whose decaying body they found in Abul Numrus, the 6th of October governorate.
The police were called in when the owner of a workshop reported a vile smell seeping out of the flat right next to his premises. Officers broke in and found the body of the unnamed 36-yearold employee, who worked at the Egyptian Shooting Club.
A nasty end: A 40-year-old fellah from Fayyoum, named only as Sayyed, was found dead at the foot of a tree in the Tenth District of Nasr City in northeast Cairo. He was clearly murdered and his injuries were particularly frightful. Sayyed had come up to Cairo looking for work, but failed to find a job. He'd been stabbed several times in the 'usual' places, but his genitals and rear end had also been mutilated.
It was most probably a crime of revenge; the injuries to his nether regions might suggest (although we can't be certain at this stage) that he was punished for having an illicit relationship with a young woman. Punishments like these are commonly meted out for such indiscretions in Upper Egypt.
Dubious 'doctor': Ayoung man started studying medicine in 1997, but only lasted a year at Medical School. But he still wanted to work as a doctor, so he opened a clinic in el-Saff, Helwan governorate, south of Cairo, despite the fact that he didn't even have a medical degree.
He set himself as a specialist in women's complaints and told his patients that he was an assistant lecturer in the Medical School at Ain Shams University in Cairo. But police were tipped off that his surgery wasn't licensed and that the 'doctor' wasn't a member of the Doctors' Association.
The suspect, who has been arrested, said that he only gave his patients advice and referred them to other doctors, although he also admitted getting paid for this. The Prosecutor has been talking to some of his patients, to see what they have to say.
A funny coincidence: A man in Bassioun, el-Gharbia governorate, strangled his wife of only 18 days in their flat then ran away. Her body was discovered by her family, worried that they hadn't heard from the newlyweds and also by the fact that the car was missing from outside their flat.
They broke in with the help of the neighbours and found the victim's body on the settee in the lounge. Her family then rang her husband, who aroused their suspicions when he claimed that he was having a summer break in Alexandria with his wife (!).
The deceased was named as Naeema and her widower as Saeed (39), who'd taken early retirement. Before marrying Naeema, he'd divorced his previous two wives, because they'd failed to bear him any children.
Detectives are still trying to trace Saeed, who, it is thought, killed his third wife and paternal cousin because she too couldn't bear him any children. A funny coincidence that all three weren't able to conceive – in such cases, it's not necessarily the woman who's always to blame.
