Egyptian navy assumes command of Joint Task Force 153 to combat terrorism in Bab Al-Mandab, Gulf of Aden

The Egyptian Armed Forces announced on Tuesday that its navy has assumed command of Joint Task Force 153 to combat terrorism in Bab Al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden.
According to Colonel Ghareeb Abdel Hafez — Spokesperson for the Egyptian Armed Forces — the mission is part of the Egyptian Armed Forces' efforts, in co-operation with the US and friendly countries, to confront threats and challenges to the security and stability of the region.
Abdel Hafez described Egypt's participation as "active" in the Joint Maritime Force (CMF).
"Its tasks are to combat smuggling and illegal activities, especially terrorist activities in the areas of the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden," he added.
Egypt is leading the force based on its pivotal role and its close co-operation with the navies of participating countries to shoulder joint responsibility for improving the security environment in all areas and sea lanes.
Joint Task Force 153 also seeks to provide safe passage for the flow of ships through international sea lanes and to address all forms and manifestations of organised crime that negatively affect the movement of world trade and the interests of partner states.
Furthermore, the Egyptian Armed Forces said Joint Task Force 153 is one of the most important joint mechanisms to enhance regional security and stability and confront threats of all types.
The combined task force began its missions in Bab Al-Mandab, the Red Sea, and Gulf of Aden last April to counter threats to the global trade zone.
