Prime Minister urges need for agricultural water reuse to preserve scarce resources
New proposal to reuse agricultural water that aims to save about 2 billion cubic metres
Published in Daily News Egypt on 21 - 11 - 2021

Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly asserted on Sunday that the reuse of agricultural water aims to preserve the country's scarce water resources, as the government launched several projects for this purpose.
Madbouly held a meeting with Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Aty, to review agricultural water reuse plans.
During the meeting, Abdel Aty reviewed a proposal to reuse agricultural water that aims to achieve optimal utilization of about 3 billion cubic metres of water flowing into the sea and lakes, after studying the environmental impact, which contributes to saving about 2 billion cubic metres per year. The project will be launched in the Nile Delta region.
Abdel Aty noted that the exploitation of the wastewater requires desalination plants and that the ministries of environment and agriculture study together the environmental impact and the optimal method for reusing wastewater in coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
Egypt's sanitation programme wants to focus on increasing the productivity of wastewater management companies to ultimately provide a sustainable solution to drinking water and effective sanitation services.
As a result of Egypt's water poverty, farmers in the Delta region and Upper Egypt have been facing trouble watering their crops.
The water that will be treated by treatment plants will be directed for agriculture. The amount of water that is used for agriculture could then be used for drinking and individuals' consumption.
