Fadel Degham, Head of the National Projects Sector at the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has been awarded the 2021 Excellence Award by the International Society of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
The award was given by the IEEE during its annual evaluation report, for the best international research contributing to the development of the communications field.
Degham, who is also head of the International Working Group for Smart Cities at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), represents the first recipient of Egyptian and Arab origin to receive this award.
The winning research was published in 2007, and had a significant impact on the development of communication systems and services, especially on what is known as smart radio systems.
These are wireless devices that have the ability to perceive their surroundings and make appropriate smart decisions, as well as develop and apply the principle of dynamically using the frequency spectrum. This contributes to increasing the efficiency and services that can be provided through it.
The results of the research has gone on to be used by nearly 3,500 researchers and scientific and industrial institutions worldwide, as well as in several subsequent research studies.
The selection of the winning research was based on recommendations from international experts supervising international scientific journals in the field of telecommunications. They nominated a selection of research published over 15 years, which had a clear contribution to the development of telecommunications systems and services.
The IEEE is the largest and most prestigious international technical society, with nearly 400,000 members. It organises nearly 300 international conferences annually, and issues many international standards for the development and operation of communications systems.
