Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said has announced the completion of the rehabilitation and lining of 831-km-long canals across the country in January, at a total cost of EGP 3bn. Gamil Helmy, Assistant Minister of Planning for follow-up on sustainable development plan, said during an inspection visit of one of the targeted canals in Minya governorate that the project comprised of 104 canals with a total length of 400 km in Minya, at a total cost of EGP 1.1bn, of which 100-km-long canals have been already rehabilitated. Helmy reviewed canals rehabilitation and lining projects in the East Samalout Engineering Department of the General Administration of Irrigation in East Minya, indicating that the lining and rehabilitation of waterways intersecting with the Samalut axis, 28.1 km long, at a cost of EGP 75.7m. On the economic and social importance of rehabilitation and lining projects for canals, Mohamed Farid, Assistant Minister of Planning for National Projects, explained that it contributes to achieving justice in water distribution, saving water, and protecting the environment, as well as providing work for villagers during the implementation of projects.
