EGP 10bn expansion of El Sokhna Port underway: Mamish
DP World Sokhna boosts its production by $8.4m worth mobile cranes
Published in Daily News Egypt on 31 - 07 - 2019

Chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Mohab Mamish, on Tuesday said the Port of El Sokhna is currently witnessing the largest expansion project with investments of about EGP 10bn.
Mamish said the development includes the construction of a new 350,000 sqm container yard, which will increase the port's capacity to more than 1m containers annually.
Furthermore, Dubai Ports World (DP World) received two new mobile cranes from the world's most advanced mobile cranes (Liebherr LHM550) at Sokhna Port, as part of its expansion plan.
The two new cranes, costing $8.4m, are a strong addition to the company's modern fleet which consists of four cranes, a versatile mobile dock, six mobile loaders, 19 ground-based RTGs, and six bridges.
The cranes are expected to boost production levels at the port of Sokhna to serve capesize vessels, the world's largest dry cargo carrier, as well as increase the efficiency of ship services to the port and increase port handling capacity.
“We are working on the development of ports, especially the Port of El Sokhna, which is currently witnessing the second basin project. We support our investor partners, especially DP World, which is a key partner in the development area in the port of Sokhna,” said Mamish.
He explained that Sokhna Port is currently witnessing the largest expansion project: the second basin project, with investments worth EGP 10bn ($560m). The development includes a new 350,000 sqm container yard. The project also includes the largest environment friendly container handling facility in the port.
“We have been able to make tremendous progress over the past years, reinforcing our efforts to modernise the port by investing in the latest and highest quality equipment. We could not do this without the support of the government, which contributed to the increase in shipping capacity, thus boosting trade around the world” said Ajay Singh, CEO of DP World Sokhna.
