Madbouly follows-up on updates of establishing Tanzania's Stiegler's Gorge dam Arab Contractors, Sewedy Electric, form alliance which won constructing project deal
Prime Minister, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Mostafa Madbouly discussed the updates of establishing the project of the Tanzanian dam -Stiegler's Gorge, with representatives of the Arab Contractors – Osman Ahmed Osman & Co, and Sewedy Electric. The two Egyptian companies form an alliance which won the deal of constructing the Tanzanian massive project. During the meeting which was held on Friday, Madbouly said that the meeting comes in view of his keenness on following the updates of the project frequently. He stressed that President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is very interested in the project. The Tanzanian government has allocated $307m for the construction of the 2,100MW Stiegler's Gorge hydroelectric plant with expected reservoir length of 100km, covering an area of about 1,350 skm, representing more than 40% of the country's proposed fiscal year (FY) 2018-19 budget. Stiegler's Gorge dam is east Africa's largest hydropower dam, located along the Rufiji river in the heart of one of Africa's largest remaining wild areas – the Selous Game Reserve. The dam is expected to provide power for the country's emerging industries, with plans to export its surplus to other east African countries. Working on constructions of the dam will be launched on January and is expected to take three years to finalise the constructions, to be inaugurated in 2022. According to a statement from the cabinet's spokesperson Nader Saad, the representatives of the alliance told the prime minister that they have started surveying and studying the topography of the location of the dam. They also began establishing the housing area of the employees on the project whose number is expected to reach 5,000. Madbouly stressed the importance of insurance for all employees. On 12 December, Madbouly, and Tanzanian President John Joseph Magufuli signed the contract to establish the project, with Madbouly representing President Al-Sisi during the signing.
