Eight terror attacks were recorded in 2018, to mark the lowest number in Egypt since 2013, the country's State Information Service (SIS) declared on Monday. The SIS issued an official report titled “2018: Terrorism is Dying in Egypt”, which showed that the rate of terrorism has fallen during the past year in Egypt. The report explained that the past year saw a decrease in the number of terrorist activities and attacks, from a high record of 222 attacks in 2014. As per the report, Egypt witnessed 50 attacks in 2017 and 199 others in 2016. The SIS said the attacks in 2018 were primitive IED attacks, with some of them failing to achieve their aims and targets. Furthermore, the SIS attributed this achievement to Egypt's major counterterrorism operations, and ‘Sinai 2018' operation, which was launched last February and managed to eradicate terrorists in North and central Sinai, as well as in several areas in the Nile Delta, and in desert locations west of the Nile Valley. Since 2013, Egypt has faced several terrorist attacks targeting hundreds of security personnel, mostly carried out by the Islamic State terrorist group's branch in Sinai. In November 2017, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al- Sisi ordered the Egyptian army and police forces to restore stability and security in the Sinai Peninsula within three months, using the "utmost force." Aiming to counter terrorism, the military launched in February 2018 a comprehensive operation, dubbed ‘Sinai 2018', to confront militants in central and North Sinai, the Nile Delta region, and the Western Desert.
