French actress and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche was named president of the international jury of the 69th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).
Berlinale Director, Dieter Kosslick, said “I am very pleased that Juliette is 2019 jury president. The festival is especially connected to her and I am delighted that they are now coming back in this outstanding position to the festival.”
“Thank you for this great honor and an invitation to your last Berlinale, dear Dieter, that means incredibly much to me. I look forward to this special rendezvous with the entire jury and will tackle with much joy and care my job,” said Binoche.
Binoche is one of the glamorous international actresses. In more than 70 films, she enthused audiences and critics inside and received numerous awards and nominations. She was the first European actress who has been awarded at the film festivals in Berlin, Venice, and Cannes.
Her first film appearance was in 1983 in Liberty Belle Pascal. She had her first starring role in André Techine's film Rendez-vous (1985) for which she was awarded the Prix Romy Schneider in the French press. Her first collaboration with Leos Carax was in Mauvais Sang (The night is young, 1986) played at the Berlinale competition.
Binoche had her international breakthrough in Philip Kaufman's English-language literary adaptation The Unbearable Lightness of Being in 1988. Since then, she has worked internationally, both in the US and in many European productions. Binoche's second collaboration with Leos Carax was Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (The Lovers on the Bridge, 1991), and was also screened in the Berlinale.
