Why Huawei's market share in Egypt dropped in 2017
Published in Daily News Egypt on 23 - 01 - 2018

Huawei phones' market share in Egypt during the second half of 2017 fell by 3% to 13.1% at the end of December compared to 15.9% at the end of June of the same year.
Samsung held the largest share of mobile phone sales in the Egyptian market by the end of last December, according to Statista.
Huawei came second in terms of sales of mobile phones in the Egyptian market despite losing about 3% of its market share.
An official at a smart phone producing company, who is not authorised to be named, said that strong competition was the main reason for the change in market share during the last six months of 2017, especially with the presence of OPPO, Tecno Mobile, and Infinix and Nokia's return.
The source said Huawei suffered during the third and fourth quarters of this year and did not offer phones to attract the public until the end of the year with the Mate 10, which did not affect sales last year. He noted that the new series could contribute to restoring the company's market share in Egypt.
Traders said rivalry between Chinese companies was on fire and each company sought to sign contracts with outlets and business chains that were dominated by major companies, including Samsung and Huawei. Recently, however, Chinese companies have gained access to these outlets.
"Huawei did not introduce any phones that attracted consumers last year except for Mate 10, which was launched at the end of the year," he said.
According to Statista, Samsung acquired 42.9% of Egypt's mobile market sales in December 2017.
Apple phones came in third in terms of sales, with 8.5% of sales in Egypt.
Lenovo ranked fourth in terms of market share in December, with the company acquiring 8.1% of the mobile market's sales.
Infinix ranked fifth by acquiring 5% of mobile market sales, achieving a growth of 100%.
The following table shows the market share of mobile phone companies in Egypt during December 2017 compared to June 2017.
