Since early history, Marsa Matruh governorate has witnessed some of Egypt's most important events and figures. Starting from Cleopatra's era where she used to spend time by the seaside where traces of one of her residences was later discovered during World War II where the governorate witnessed Al-Alamein's two battles that played a decisive role in the war's victory. Traces of these events are still documented in several museums that will shortly be joined by another one as the Ministry of Antiquities announced on Thursday.
The ministry in cooperation with the governorate are to build a new museum to display 1,000 relics that have been discovered in the governorate. The museum is planned to be a part of Marsa Matruh's public library after clearing some space and setting the proper requirements to display the found monuments.
The museum mainly aims to shed light upon the history of Marsa Matruh and the strong role it has been playing in Egypt's ancient history.
Elham Salah, head of the Antiquities Ministry's Museums Section, stated in a press release that the museum is also planning to have a section for cultural and educational activities.
The museum consists of two floors, each tells a certain part of Pharaonic history in securing the desert's out boarders with castles. The museum also aims to highlight the king's efforts in building decorated, superior temples.
