State appeal on annulled Red Sea islands deal postponed to 5 December The state's lawyer accidentally submitted a 1928 map proving Egypt's ownership of the islands
The Administrative Court postponed on Monday the state's appeal against the annulled maritime demarcation deal, which would have transferred the sovereignty of Tiran and Sanafir islands to Saudi Arabia, to 5 December. The case was postponed for documents to be submitted to the court. During the court session, the State Lawsuits Authority, the body representing the state in this case, submitted a map from 1928 proving Egypt's ownership of the islands. It was submitted by mistake in the previous session, according to lawyer Khaled Ali. "But when we demanded that these documents be upheld in today's session, the state representative denied that such documents were presented among their file," Ali wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. On 21 June, the State Council annulled the agreement, having determined that the Red Sea islands are Egyptian. Within a few hours of this decision, the state appealed it. The controversial agreement was made in April during a visit by Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. It has since sparked widespread discontent among both pro- and anti-government factions in the country, leading to a number of arrests, which included lawyer Malek Adly.
