Published in Daily News Egypt on 06 - 06 - 2008

Twenty years ago a childless civil servant jumped for joy when a days-old baby landed on his doorstep, considering him a divine gift. But a few days ago he disowned him for stealing his money and attacking his wife - the woman who raised him - to buy drugs.
Details of the crime were revealed by Sayeda Zainab Prosecutor Salah Al-Shahid who ordered the imprisonment adopted son for four days pending investigation.
One night on his way back from work, the adopted father, who had lost hope of having children, his feelings were mixed when he found a baby near a mosque bundled in a white cover.
Overjoyed, he took it home to his wife and they instantly decided to adopt it. The next day he registered the child in his name and moved to a rented apartment away from neighbors and family, where the three lived for two years before returning to tell their acquaintances that the little boy was their natural son. They were able to have him after undergoing surgery abroad, they said.
As their son Magdy transitioned from boyhood to adulthood, he frequently got into trouble and was repeatedly arrested on several charges, including theft, but always managed to escape imprisonment.
When he eventually dropped out of school and spent hours asleep, complained from constant headaches, and became short-tempered and foul-mouthed, the mother realized that he was a drug addict. When she became certain that he was stealing money from her closet told her husband, who admitted to beating him and threatened to kick him out of the house and asked him to find a job after he stopped giving him an allowance.
But when the adopted father returned home a few days ago he neither found his wife nor Magdy. He was horrified when the neighbors told him that his wife was moved to hospital and that the son was arrested.
He later learnt that the had assaulted his adopted mother after when she told him that he was not her son when, under the influence of drugs, he attempted to molest her sexually as she was sleep. When he tried to escape, the neighbors, who had heard her screams, captured him and handed him over to Chief Investigator Amin Ezz Eddin.
At the police station, the adopted father presented a certificate proving his wife s infertility and disowned what he called "a poisonous snake that he had raised in his house for 20 years.
