Published in Daily News Egypt on 24 - 08 - 2016

The General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC) received approximately 14,720 imported food and industry containers totalling 2,345m tonnes for examination during July.
The GOEIC's report said that 5,702 imported food containers weighing 1.9m tonnes were examined of the total 14,720.
The examination results showed the validity of 5,586 containers, while 116 were rejected for non-conformity to standards. The most important accepted food commodities are wheat, corn, rice, sugar, beans, meat, and poultry, while the rejected commodities are often meat, wheat, corn, canned foods, and beverages.
The report pointed out that the number of the imported industrial containers amounted to 8,958, out of which 60 were rejected. The total imported industrial containers in July reached 9,018, containing detergents, soaps, home furniture, toys, car filters, electric pumps, refrigerators, and tyres.
Head of GOEIC Alaa Abdel Karim said that the GOEIC is keen to remove all obstacles facing serious exporters and importers, with an emphasis on facing all types of fraud and manipulation.
Abdel Karim pointed out that registered, amended, and renewed commercial records at all GOEIC branches amount to1,695 records—this comprises 932 applications for import records, 399 applications for export records, 175 applications for commercial agent records, and 189 applications for production requirement records.
Abdel Karim noted that GOEIC has issued 14,987 certificates of origin for exported Egyptian goods as specified in rules of origin protocols concerning preferential trade agreements between Egypt and many other countries and economic blocs for exemptions and customs advantages granted to Egyptian exports.
GOEIC set investigative measures for the origins of exported and imported goods from countries with preferential agreements. The GOEIC investigated 252 export certificates and 168 import certificates.
Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Kabil said that the ministry is keen to develop the procedure system so as to contribute to accelerating the pace of examination and release of cargo and not to overstock products in various ports.
The minister confirmed the acceleration of the conformity of these goods to technical standard and specifications to ensure the quality and safety of imported products.
