The revenues of Egyptian Railways increased in August to reach EGP 129.1m, compared to EGP 121.4m in July 2015, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS)'s monthly bulletin.
The bulletin revealed that the revenues have significantly increased on an annual basis compared to August 2014, where they have recorded EGP 104.5m.
However, CAPMAS added that the number of train passengers decreased in August recording 15.1 million compared to July where it reached 17 million passengers.
The number of passengers also decreased compared to August 2014 when 15.4 million passengers were recorded, according to CAPMAS.
The monthly bulletin further noted an increase in the quantity of goods transported by trains to mark 366,700 tonnes compared to 343,100 tonnes in July 2015.
However, the quantity of railway-transported goods decreased compared to August 2014 when 377,500 tonnes of goods were recorded, CAPMAS added.
In July, the Ministry of Transport raised the ticket prices of air conditioned train carts to EGP 20 for first class and EGP 10 for second class.
In late August, the Ministry of Finance announced it has allocated urgent funds worth EGP 2.8bn for several ministries. The fund included EGP 74.1m for the Ministry of Transport to improve the operation of non-economic railway lines.
